MIDDLEFIELD, CT – A person reported missing was found dead near Black Pond in Middlefield after a search that brought together state and local emergency crews Monday evening.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Environmental Conservation Police responded to the missing-person report around 5 p.m. The search later included EnCon police, K9 teams, Connecticut State Police, and the Middlefield Fire Department.
Officials have not released the person’s identity because next of kin are still being notified. Investigators said they believe the death was an isolated incident and that there is no danger to the public.
State environmental police responded after the missing-person report
DEEP said Environmental Conservation Police were sent to the area Monday after receiving the report of a missing person. The call came in around 5 p.m., triggering a response in and around Black Pond, a wooded area that can require specialized search help.
Because the initial report involved a missing person near a pond and surrounding terrain, the search quickly expanded beyond a single agency. EnCon officers coordinated with other responders as they worked to locate the person as quickly as possible.
The department has not said how long the person had been missing before the report was made or what circumstances led searchers to Black Pond. Those details have not been released as investigators continue their work.
K9 teams, state police, and fire crews joined the search
As the search continued, crews from several agencies joined in. DEEP said the effort included EnCon police, K9 teams, Connecticut State Police, and the Middlefield Fire Department.
That kind of combined response is often used when officials need both ground searches and additional support in difficult terrain. In this case, the agencies concentrated on the area near Black Pond until the missing person was located.
Authorities did not say how the person was found or whether any equipment beyond the K9 teams and standard search resources was used. They also did not release a timeline for how long the search lasted before the discovery was made.
