MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minneapolis police say one person died after a shooting aboard a Green Line light rail train Saturday evening, and the suspect remained at large as investigators worked to determine what happened.
Officers were called to the train around 9 p.m. after reports of gunfire. Police said the train was traveling from Stadium Village station in Minneapolis toward St. Paul when the shooting occurred.
The train later stopped at Westgate station near University Avenue and Curfew Street, where officers found an adult victim with at least one gunshot wound.
Police said the victim died despite emergency efforts
When officers reached the scene, they tried life-saving measures, but the victim died there, according to police. Authorities have not publicly identified the person.
Police have also not said what led up to the shooting or whether the victim and suspect knew each other. Investigators said they were still trying to piece together the circumstances around the attack.
The shooting took place on a public transit train that was in motion when the violence started, adding another layer of urgency for riders and first responders who had to respond at a station stop minutes later.
Suspect reportedly left the train soon after the gunfire
Police said the suspect reportedly got off the train shortly after the shooting. That detail has become central to the search as investigators try to track the person’s movements after the attack.
Officials did not release a description of the suspect or say whether the person was armed when leaving the train. No arrests had been announced as of the latest police update.
Because the suspect was no longer on the train when officers arrived, investigators are likely relying on witness accounts and any available transit video or nearby surveillance to help identify the person.
Westgate station became the focus of the response
The train stopped at Westgate station near University Avenue and Curfew Street, where police and other emergency responders converged after the call came in. The station became the immediate scene of the investigation after the shooting was reported on board.
Transit riders in the area were affected by the police response as investigators worked at the station and around the train. The incident involved a route linking Minneapolis and St. Paul, a heavily used corridor for local riders.
Police did not say how many people were on the train at the time or whether anyone else was hurt. Those details have not been publicly released.
Investigators are still trying to determine the motive
Police said they are still determining what led to the shooting. At this stage, they have not described a motive, a dispute, or any other trigger for the violence.
That leaves detectives with the core tasks of reconstructing the sequence of events, identifying the suspect, and determining whether the shooting was targeted or random. Police have not said whether any weapon was recovered.
Anyone who saw the shooting or has information is being asked to contact police or CrimeStoppers.
No arrests have been announced as the search continues
As of the latest update, no arrests had been made. The suspect remained on the loose while Minneapolis police continued the investigation.
The killing on a light rail train has raised concerns about safety on a transit line that serves both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Officials have not announced any additional security measures in response to the shooting.
For now, the case remains open, with police asking the public to help fill in the gaps left by the initial response and the suspect’s reported departure from the train.
