CALIFORNIA – A California woman ended up in the emergency room in critical condition less than a day after having a single impacted wisdom tooth pulled. The TikTok creator, known online as Sar Bear, said swelling on one side of her face quickly grew severe enough to interfere with her breathing and swallowing. Her video recounting the ordeal has drawn several hundred thousand views. She is now recovering after receiving emergency hospital treatment.
Swelling Worsened Rapidly in the Hours After Monday Extraction
Sar Bear had the tooth removed on a Monday and at first believed the puffiness in her face was part of normal healing. Photos she shared showed the swelling growing steadily worse over the rest of that day.
By the next morning, she was having trouble swallowing, and the swelling kept spreading even with medication. Her dentist prescribed an antibiotic and advised her to head to the ER if things got worse.
Hospital Staff Rushed Treatment as Swelling Reached Her Airway
After friends and followers on Instagram urged her to get help, her dentist told her to go to the emergency room. She said her panic grew as the swelling began affecting her airway.
Staff triaged her quickly and told her she was in critical condition. She received four IV antibiotics and a steroid, underwent a CT scan, was given extra pain medication, and was seen by an ENT surgeon.
Recovery Underway Within 48 Hours of Emergency Care
Her condition improved dramatically within two days of treatment. A week later, she still had some lingering swelling but was continuing antibiotics and recovering well.
In her TikTok caption, she noted her case was apparently rare and said the video was not meant to frighten anyone preparing for dental surgery of their own.
Viewers Split Over Dental Care and Antibiotic Claims
Some commenters blamed her dentist and urged her to file a complaint with the state board, claiming antibiotics should always follow an extraction. Others asked why she had not gone to the hospital sooner, while some who had multiple wisdom teeth removed said they never saw swelling like hers.
Antibiotics are not routinely given after every tooth removal, and their use depends on the patient and the procedure. Nothing in her account shows the dentist acted improperly.
