DAYTON, OH – Dash camera video released by the Dayton Police Department shows a chaotic sequence that began with officers responding to an unrelated crash and ended with a suspect crashing a stolen police cruiser through a home, then fighting officers during his arrest.
The incident happened Sept. 3 after the suspect drove through a closed intersection at high speed while officers were already working the original crash scene. Police said cruisers were blocking the roadway, but the man kept going, struck a street sign, and drew officers into a pursuit that escalated quickly.
How the pursuit began at the blocked intersection
According to Dayton police, the suspect entered the closed intersection despite the active scene and the presence of police vehicles. Officers first tried to stop the vehicle after it drove erratically and knocked down a street sign.
Police then used a PIT maneuver, which caused the vehicle to crash. The suspect got out and ran into a backyard, and body camera footage shows officers chasing him briefly on foot before losing sight of him. That pause did not end the danger, because the man returned to the original scene and climbed into a police cruiser.
Suspect takes a cruiser and keeps fleeing
Video released by police shows officers ordering the man out of the cruiser once they saw him inside it. Instead of surrendering, he drove away and crashed into another police cruiser before fleeing again.
That second escape triggered another pursuit. Dayton police said the chase ended when the suspect drove the cruiser directly through a house. The video release does not describe the full extent of structural damage, but the impact was severe enough to stop the chase and force officers back into an arrest effort at the scene.
Fight with officers during the arrest
Police said the suspect resisted arrest after the cruiser went through the house. During the struggle, he bit one officer and tried to grab that officer’s gun.
Officers were eventually able to take him into custody as he continued to fight. The department’s account makes clear that the arrest was not immediate or simple, and that officers had to overcome active resistance after a vehicle pursuit that had already involved multiple crashes and a stolen police cruiser.
Injuries to officers and people inside the house
Seven officers were injured during the arrest, according to Dayton police. Six of them were treated at a hospital and released.
Two people inside the home were also taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. Police did not provide further details about those injuries in the video release, but the house crash clearly broadened the incident beyond a police pursuit and into a residential emergency.
Warrants that were active when the incident happened
Police said the suspect was wanted on multiple felony warrants at the time, including charges tied to a homicide and an aggravated robbery. Dayton police did not provide those warrant details as part of the video release, but the information helps explain why officers were trying to take him into custody once the incident unfolded.
