DALLAS – A thief stole a purse from the wheelchair of a terminally ill 3-year-old boy at the State Fair of Texas, taking his seizure medication and about $1,500 in cash. Dallas mother Kayla Price said the theft happened around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, while she briefly turned to help her older son. The medication costs about $2,000 to replace. No arrest has been reported.

Purse Vanishes From Back of Devin’s Wheelchair in Seconds

Price told FOX 4 she placed her purse in the back lip of her son Devin’s wheelchair during the family’s visit to the fair. When she looked away for a moment to care for her older son, the purse was gone. She did not see who took it.

She said Devin had been having a good day, which is why the family decided to go. The trip quickly turned into a frightening ordeal. The State Fair of Texas draws large crowds to Fair Park in Dallas every fall.

Stolen Nasal Spray Was Devin’s Emergency Seizure Medication

Inside the purse were two doses of Devin’s emergency nasal spray medication, which is used to stop his seizures. Price said losing the medicine left her terrified he could have a seizure without it on hand. Emergency nasal sprays are commonly prescribed to quickly stop prolonged seizures before they become dangerous.

According to posts sharing the story, insurance would not cover an immediate replacement and Devin later suffered another prolonged seizure. Those details have not been independently confirmed. Price told FOX 4 the medication costs roughly $2,000 to replace.

Mother Says Terminally Ill Son Still Smiles, Dances, and Sings

Devin Cervantes is battling a terminal brain tumor and has been through multiple rounds of chemotherapy, according to posts about his case. He is now receiving hospice care. Photos shared online show Devin in his wheelchair and receiving hospital care.

Despite his diagnosis, Price said Devin still loves to smile, dance, and sing. She has started a GoFundMe to help with costs related to his cancer care. The family’s outing to the fair was meant to give Devin a happy day.

Dallas Man Reportedly Covers Refill as Police Seek Thief

Posts say a Dallas man named Chris Bailey stepped in and sent the family money to replace the medication. Price also filed a police report and publicly pleaded with the thief, saying they did not know the pain they were causing her family.

The Dallas Police Department has not announced an arrest in the case. Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Dallas police. The theft has sparked outrage online, with many calling it a heartless crime against a sick child.
