ARIZONA – An 18-year-old Arizona teen gave an elderly man the shoes off his own feet after noticing the man’s footwear was barely staying on. Jordan Hope said he felt that God was urging him to approach the man, later identified as Mr. Roy. A stranger filmed the moment and shared it online, and the encounter has since grown into a daily friendship. The teen’s simple gesture led to a lunch, a deeper connection, and a fundraiser.
Teen Notices Elderly Man’s Shoes Barely Hanging On His Feet
Hope said the man’s shoes were only partly on his feet when he saw him. He described feeling a strong pull from God to walk over, turn around, and give him new slides.
So he took off his own shoes and handed them over on the spot. Hope said he felt he may have brought some peace into the man’s life in that moment.
Stranger Captures Act of Kindness on Video in Arizona Parking Lot
Hope did not know a stranger was recording the entire encounter. The footage shows Hope crouching in a parking lot to help the man, who was standing with a walker.
The video was later shared online, where it quickly drew wide attention for the teen’s quiet act of generosity. Hope has since spoken about the moment in a television interview.
Return Visit Reveals Mr. Roy Lost His Wife Two Weeks Earlier
After leaving, Hope said something told him to turn back. He eventually found Mr. Roy inside a Walgreens and learned the man’s wife had died just two weeks earlier.
Hope said he believed Mr. Roy simply needed a friend, noting that asking for help can be hard. He said he was glad to be there to show his light to other people around him.
Lunch at Culver’s Leads to Daily Calls and GoFundMe Support
Because Mr. Roy struggles to get into his own car due to swelling in his legs, Hope ordered him a rideshare. The two then met up for lunch together at Culver’s.
Hope said the day’s plans changed because of a tug on his heart he credits to God. He now talks with Mr. Roy every day and has started a GoFundMe to help support the elderly man.
