WELLESLEY, MASSACHUSETTS – A Massachusetts medical examiner has released the causes of death for 7-year-old Kai MacAusland and his 6-year-old sister, Ella, who were found dead in their Wellesley home on April 24, 2026. Both children died from mechanical asphyxia and acute intoxication involving multiple medications. Their mother, 49-year-old Janette MacAusland, has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder. The findings have deepened the shock surrounding the case.

Toxicology Finds Sleep, Anxiety, and Pain Medications in Both Children

According to the medical examiner, both children had several medications in their systems. They included zolpidem, a prescription sleep drug, and lorazepam, a prescription anxiety medication. The findings add new detail to an already devastating case.

The common pain relievers acetaminophen and ibuprofen were also found. Medical experts say the mix of sedating drugs and asphyxiation could become key evidence in determining whether the killings were premeditated.

Mother Fled About 140 Miles to Aunt’s Home in Vermont

Authorities say Janette MacAusland killed her children around April 22 before driving roughly 140 miles to her aunt’s home in Vermont. The trip took her across state lines. She works as an acupuncturist and massage therapist.

Investigators say she arrived distraught and injured, then confessed to killing both children. Police said she told them she wanted herself and her children to be with God together. Police later found the siblings dead inside the family’s Massachusetts home. Anyone in crisis can call or text 988 for free, confidential support.

Killings Came Amid Divorce and Custody Battle

Janette and her estranged husband were going through a divorce and custody dispute. Her husband filed for divorce in October 2025 and asked for custody of the children. The case was still moving through family court.

The children were killed just days after the court appointed someone to investigate the family’s custody situation. The timing has drawn close attention from investigators and the public. Photos show the two siblings smiling side by side.

Janette MacAusland Pleads Not Guilty, Due in Norfolk Superior Court November 3

On October 19, a grand jury indicted her on two counts of first-degree murder. The indictment followed months of investigation. She has pleaded not guilty and remains held without bail.

She is scheduled to appear in Norfolk Superior Court on November 3. If convicted, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The Wellesley community continues to mourn the loss of the two young children.
