WYANDOTTE, MI – Police in Wyandotte say a man suspected of killing his mother died after shooting himself during a traffic stop in Toledo, Ohio. Investigators said the 41-year-old was pulled over Sunday morning after being identified through Flock camera technology.
When officers tried to speak with him, police said he shot himself inside the vehicle. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The case is now a murder investigation in Wyandotte and a separate death investigation connected to the police stop in Ohio.
Wyandotte officers found the woman dead on Sixth Street
Wyandotte police said officers responded to a home in the 800 block of Sixth Street around 3 a.m. Sunday. Inside, they found a 67-year-old woman who had been shot and killed.
The victim was the mother of the man later stopped in Toledo, according to police. Authorities have not released either of their names. The department also has not said what led officers to the home before the discovery, only that the woman was found dead in her residence.
Flock cameras helped police locate the suspect in Toledo
According to Wyandotte police, the man was identified by Flock cameras before Toledo officers found his vehicle during the morning traffic stop. The stop happened about 10 a.m. Sunday, only hours after the killing in Wyandotte was reported.
Flock systems are commonly used by police agencies to scan license plates and help locate vehicles of interest. In this case, police said the technology helped alert officers to the suspect’s movements and allowed them to intercept him in Toledo. No additional details about the traffic stop were immediately released.
Police have not identified the mother or son
Wyandotte police have not released the names of the woman or the man. The department also has not said whether the suspect had any prior contact with police or whether a weapon was recovered after the shooting.
