MERRICK COUNTY, NE – Two people died after a head-on collision Wednesday evening in Merrick County, where deputies say a westbound Ford Focus crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a Chevy Malibu.
The Merrick County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 5 p.m. on Oct. 8 near Highway 30 and 3rd Road. Investigators identified the Ford Focus driver as Jean Worth Loudy, 43, of Grand Island, and the Malibu driver as Logan Engel, 30, of Central City.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies say the Ford Focus entered the eastbound lane
According to the sheriff’s office, the Ford Focus was traveling westbound before it moved into the eastbound lane. That led to the collision with the eastbound Chevy Malibu.
Authorities have not said why the Ford crossed into oncoming traffic. The crash scene was investigated after deputies were dispatched to the area in the late afternoon.
The location sits along a stretch of Highway 30 where traffic moves in both directions, making lane departures especially dangerous.
Victims identified as Grand Island and Central City residents
The sheriff’s office named the driver of the Ford Focus as Jean Worth Loudy, who lived in Grand Island. The driver of the Chevy Malibu was identified as Logan Engel of Central City.
No additional details about either driver were released in the initial statement. Officials did not immediately provide information about where each driver was headed or whether there were passengers in either vehicle.
For now, the identification of the victims is the main public information released by investigators.
Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors
MCSO said alcohol and speed are not believed to have played a role in the fatal collision. That assessment narrows the early focus of the investigation, even as deputies continue reviewing what happened before impact.
The sheriff’s office also said both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Authorities did not say whether airbags deployed or describe the extent of the damage to either vehicle.
Those details may matter as investigators work to determine the chain of events leading up to the crash.
Crash scene response came after a 5 p.m. dispatch
Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 5 p.m., when the crash was reported near the intersection area of Highway 30 and 3rd Road. The timing suggests the collision happened during a busy evening travel period.
The sheriff’s office has not said how long the roadway remained affected while investigators processed the scene. It also did not provide any estimate of vehicle speeds or road conditions at the time.
What is clear is that the collision was serious enough to cause two deaths immediately at the scene.
Investigation continues as officials seek more answers
The Merrick County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing. That means deputies are still working to piece together the final sequence of events and determine exactly how the vehicles came together.
No further details have been released about possible witnesses, citations or whether additional agencies assisted at the scene. For now, the sheriff’s office has only confirmed the basic facts of the crash and the deaths of both drivers.
Officials have not announced any new findings since the initial report.
