MONROE, MICHIGAN – A Michigan high school volleyball player and her father have filed a federal lawsuit against Monroe Public Schools, claiming the district failed to tell players that an opposing team had a transgender athlete. Briley Lechner’s team played Ann Arbor Skyline on September 9, 2025, and lost 3-0. The family argues the district’s actions violated Title IX. The district previously found their complaint unsubstantiated.

Lawsuit Says Coaches Knew About Skyline Player Day Before Match

According to the lawsuit, Monroe coaches and the athletic director learned the day before the match that Skyline had a player who was born male and identifies as a girl. The suit claims they never informed Monroe players or their parents. The match took place during the 2025 high school volleyball season.

The family says players should have been given that information before taking the court. The Skyline player has not been publicly named, and the lawsuit is directed at the Monroe district rather than the student. The family is seeking accountability from district leaders.

Locker Room Access at Center of Title IX Claim

The lawsuit also claims the player was allowed to use the girls’ locker room during the event. The family argues this, along with the lack of notice, violated their rights under Title IX. The family has not said whether any specific incident occurred in the locker room.

Title IX is the federal law that bans sex-based discrimination in schools that receive federal funding. How it applies to transgender athletes remains the subject of ongoing legal and political debate.

District Previously Called Complaint Unsubstantiated

Before the lawsuit, the family filed a complaint with Monroe Public Schools. The district reviewed the matter and found the complaint unsubstantiated. The family has now taken the dispute to federal court.

The district has not publicly responded to the new lawsuit, according to the post. Monroe is located in southeast Michigan, about 40 miles south of Detroit. Ann Arbor Skyline is a public high school in Ann Arbor.

Case Adds to National Debate Over Transgender Athletes in Girls’ Sports

Supporters of the lawsuit argue that female athletes deserve to know who they are competing against and to have private facilities. They say schools should be transparent with families. Some parents have said they felt blindsided by the situation.

Advocates for transgender students argue that disclosing a student’s gender identity can violate privacy and expose young people to harassment. State athletic associations and courts across the country continue to grapple with how to balance these concerns. The outcome of the case could influence how schools handle similar situations.
